Angola: Tsikaya - Musicos do interior

Angola is one of Africa's major oil producers, yet it's also one of the world's poorest countries. Its recent history is one of conflict - with colonial Portuguese rulers from 1961 to 1975, when Angola gained independence, and following that almost three decades of civil war. So it's not surprising that the country's traditional music isn't so widely known

In 1997, Angolan-Portuguese composer, instrument designer and sonic artist Victor Gama began the Tsikaya project. Along with a team of researchers, he travelled to some of the most remote villages of Angola to record performances of traditional music. In this afternoon's programme we'll hear some of the results (Pangeiart PAN105)
