Six months after Cyclone Winston swept through Fiji causing widespread devastation, an aid agency says the recovery is being hindered by problems in getting building materials.

The massive storm killed 43 people and flattened many villages.

Fiji Red Cross director-general Filipe Nainoca said many people were still living in tents and temporary accommodation, as they were waiting for building materials to arrive.

"There's a lot of orders and the orders still haven't been fulfilled because there's a shortage of building materials."

Mr Nainoca said the delay in getting construction under way was one of the country's biggest challenges in terms of shelter.
