Wellington have won the inter-provincial men's golf championship for the 13th time, beating North Harbour 4-1 in the final at the Paraparaumu Beach Club.

The hosts became the most successful district in the 60-year history of the tournament after outlasting 2005 winners North Harbour in demanding and testing conditions on the Kapiti Coast.

Harbour's Tom Cardno beat James Betts one up but Wellington's captain Adam Church produced a superb birdie on the final hole to gain a two-up win over Cameron Jones.

Tom Brockelsby beat Scott Johnson four and two, Peter Spearman-Burn made a birdie at the last to grab his two-up win over James Davis and Ben Campbell made a safe par at the 17th to beat Kevin Budden two and one.

Players had to cope with exceptionally strong and gusting nor-westerly winds that gave way to persistent rain and turned back to strong winds at the end of the day.

It marks 10 years since Wellington last won the prize as the best provincial team in the country and have gone one win ahead of Auckland in the all-time list of wins in the event.

Wellington reached the final with a three and half to a one and half win over Otago while North Harbour beat Auckland 3-2 in the other semi-final.
