The football manager Jose Mourinho's quest for a unique European Champions League title with a third different club has started in style with nine-time winners Real Madrid beating Ajax Amsterdam 2-0 on a night of commanding wins for the main contenders.

While Real were giving Ajax a harsh lesson on their return to the top table, Arsenal were even more ruthless in a 6-0 hammering of Sporting Braga Portugal, while Chelsea were similarly untroubled in a 4-1 victory over Zilina of Slovakia.

AC Milan beat Auxerre 2-0 and last year's beaten finalists Bayern Munich also beat AS Roma 2-0.
