Aaron Gate, Campbell Stewart, Regan Gough and Jordan Kerby shaved more than two seconds off the world record in their first round heat, only for Italy to set a time nine one hundredths of a second quicker.
The New Zealanders raced Australia for the bronze medal, and were leading when one of the members crashed, opening the way for Australia to win bronze.
Meanwhile in the men's sprint, Sam Webster progressed to the 1/8 finals after winning his 1/16 final sprint by under a tenth of a second.
New Zealand narrowly missed out on a medal in the sailing this afternoon, with sailors Paul Snow-Hansen and Dan Willcox finishing fourth in the men's 470 event. The sailors finished third in the medal race, but fell just short of overhauling Spain, who claimed bronze by coming fifth. Australia took the gold and Sweden won silver.
Lisa Carrington won her heat in the women's K1 500m, while Caitlin Regal has also qualified for the semi-finals after coming third in her heat in the same event.
Golfer Lydia Ko finished her round one under par, leaving her tied for 14th. Ko is four shots off the leading Swede Madelene Sagstrom.
