After playing 38 games for the Phoenix in the A-League, Singh's move to Bayern Munich was confirmed this week.

Rufer, who played for Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga for six years in the early 90's, coached Singh for seven years at his academy in Auckland

He says during the recent Under-20 World Cup he had a number of calls from German clubs about New Zealand players including Singh.

Singh will join the Bayern under-23 squad which plays in the third tier competition in Germany.

Rufer feels the 20 year old has got what it takes to succeed.

"To be honest from day one you could see that the kid was special, sweet left foot, had a football intelligence that really was superior to everyone else, even over the years you very rarely see this type of player.... I think can can fit in over there."

Rufer did make comparisons to Marco Rojas, another young New Zealander who tried to crack the German game.

Rojas failed to make it into the Stuttgart first team in his three years with the club.

Rufer, admits he is an optimist, but he does think Singh has what it takes to one day play in the Bundesliga.

"It is cut throat, it's a ruthless environment and an incredibly high level, so it's really tough, but I think with Sapreet, the type of player he is, it could work."

The Bundesliga season starts in August.
