The Kurow Museum Committee has been working on the project, which has the McCaw family's approval.

Committee chair John Sturgeon said McCaw grew up in the area and the statue would honour his contributions to rugby.

An Oamaru sculptor would be creating the full-body statue but the committee was appealing to the public for funding before deciding on the materials, Mr Sturgeon said.

"We're also looking for clothes that Richie wore - in regards, rugby jersey, rugby shorts, socks and boots - so we can get the exact sizing correct."

The sculpture was expected to be ready early next year.
