Phoenix stun Sydney

From the ashes of second to last place on the A-League ladder, the Wellington Phoenix have risen to a 3-1 upset win over Sydney FC.

Sydney had labelled the game a must-win in their pursuit of a top six playoff berth but were surprised by the Phoenix, who had nothing to lose.

Despite a season soured by a lack of goals, the Phoenix found the net twice in the space of two minutes in the first half - through Blake Powell and Hamish Watson.

Roly Bonevacia scored again for the visitors shortly before half time, sending disgruntled Sydney fans home early from Allianz Stadium.

The home side broke their duck early in the second half when Filip Holosko chipped over the top of the Phoenix defence, who had clumped together in the goal mouth.

But, determined to notch a rare win away from home, the Phoenix shut the gate and held on to their unlikely two-goal advantage.
