McClenaghan suffered a fracture just above the left-eye in the opening ODI against Pakistan at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on Monday, and will undergo minor cosmetic surgery on Friday.

Bracewell joins the squad ahead of Thursday's second ODI in Napier and will travel with the team to Auckland ahead of the final match against Pakistan on Sunday.

Black Caps coach Mike Hesson said McClenaghan's health was the priority.

"Obviously our main focus is making sure Mitch is ok and we'll continue to monitor him over the coming days," said Hesson.

"Doug has been in superb form this summer and we're confident he can come in and do a good job for us. He's an integral member of our wider bowling group and brings a lot to the side."

On Saturday Bracewell took three wickets to help Central Districts beat Canterbury and qualify for the Ford Trophy one day domestic final.
