The Tasman Rugby Union has announced that former All Blacks hooker and Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett will join the Makos as assistant coach working alongside head coach Leon MacDonald for the next two seasons.

Hammett has previous provincial rugby coaching experience with Canterbury in 2006 before moving to Super rugby as an assistant with the Crusaders from 2007 & 2010.

In 2011, Hammett took over the head coaching reins at the Hurricanes, before moving to the UK with the Cardiff Blues.

He returned home earlier this year.

Hammett said he has a similar philosophy on the game to McDonald, having played with him.

"I've been itching for an opportunity to work hands-on with the players on the grass, rather than as a head coach. This is a great opportunity and I'm looking forward to getting to work as rugby never stands still."

MacDonald welcomed Hammett to the Makos fold.

"Hammer is an old team-mate who has massive respect and mana amongst his peers. He's a straight shooter and competitive, with a huge work ethic and attention to detail. He fits the Makos ethos perfectly and I'm excited about bringing his experience and energy to help grow this team."

Meanwhile Tasman continued their impressive start to the ITM Cup beating Manawatu 41-21 in Blenheim on Thursday night.

The Makos led 21-7 at half-time, but scored two tries midway through the second half to clear away for the win.

Tasman scored four tries to two to remain unbeaten with maximum points and top of the Premiership standings after three rounds.

Manawatu have lost all three of their games after earning promotion last season by winning the Championship.
