The Ministry for Primary Industries has set up two new mobile laboratories to respond to fruit fly investigations more quickly.

The labs are designed to be transported and up and running within a day of where a fruit fly is discovered, it said.

They would allow the examination of any insects trapped in the area, the inspection of fruit and incubation facilities so any eggs or larvae in fallen fruit can hatch and be identified.

The ministry had investigated two separate fruit fly finds in Whangarei this year and said the temporary facilities set up were expensive, cramped and took days to become operational.
