John Lawson, an engineering tutor, said he was unfairly dismissed and took his case to the Employment Relations Authority.

Mr Lawson said the institute looked at his emails from a parliamentary researcher, which discussed the performance of the institute's chief executive, after he called for a no-confidence motion against her.

He said he was acting as the branch president of the Tertiary Education Union, but the institute said he breached his obligations of fidelity and good faith.

It released a statement today saying the parties had met and resolved the matters.
