The pillars holding up the 300m pier will take up to 18 months to repair, with the project due to start in spring.

In a double blow for the struggling area, its library will also be closed for repairs.

The council is considering a temporary replacement for the library and whether the pier can be used while work was done.

New Brighton Business Association member Nikki Griffin said the pier was used by a lot of people, and shutting it would be a hindrance.

"It brings a lot of tourists out to come and walk along the pier, they come into the retail environment.

Ms Griffin said it was uncertain whether the pier's popular fireworks display would still happen this Guy Fawkes.
