The new limit applied to the area bounded by Kilmore, Madras and St Asaph Streets. Victoria Street and and sections of Colombo Street were also included.

The changes introduced were influenced by the 'Share an Idea' campaign launched after the earthquakes, and were part of a series of transport projects under the An Accessible City works programme.

Christchurch City Council transport operations manager Steffan Thomas said the new speed limit would provide a safer transport network for everyone.
