A 24-year-old man accused of murdering a woman exercising in Auckland's Remuera has been granted name suppression.
The man appeared in the Auckland District Court this morning and was remanded in custody. He will reappear in court on 27 January.
A woman's body was found on the front lawn of a house on Shore Road, in the Auckland suburb of Remuera, at 10.50am yesterday.
A man surrendered to police an hour later.
Detective Inspector Kevin Hooper said they believed the woman was out exercising along the road when she was attacked and killed.
Police did not believe the woman knew her attacker.
They were still trying to reach the victim's family, who were out of Auckland, and would release her name late this afternoon.
Shore Road resident Madison Garrett said she realised something was wrong when she heard police sirens.
"I heard about six police cars drive past, siren after siren, and ... went to look out my kitchen window and I can actually see the house from my kitchen, and there were just police cars everywhere," she said.
"They blocked off the road immediately."
Ms Garrett said many of the street's residents were on holiday, and some had phoned her to check she was all right.
Shore Road is dotted with expensive real estate and the prestigious private school St Kentigern School for Boys and Catholic girls' school Baradene College.
