A tourist pulled over on the Waikato Expressway for doing 180kmh thought he was doing only 80kmh, police say.
Senior Sergeant Steve Ambler said another driver was caught doing 151kmh near the Tahuna roundabout, and police had little time for the excuses of either driver.
There was no room for error at the speeds reached in either incident, and both drivers had their licenses suspended for 28 days, he said.
Traffic was heavy on roads in the region and people needed to be patient and expect delays through the holiday season, Mr Ambler said.
