Auckland's transport agency is moving to make paying for public transport simpler.

It is looking at introducing new fare zones for buses and trains, and charging AT Hop card users for one journey, even if they use a combination of bus and train.

The new zones will generally be in 10 kilometre intervals, instead of the current system which is erratic.

Auckland Transport is also looking at day passes and monthly passes.

A day pass for unlimited travel on bus and train would cost $18, and a monthly pass between $200 and $210.

The plan is open for consultation until early June, with the aim of introducing the new system in the middle of next year.

Ferries would not be included.
