The Isaac Theatre Royal has raised more than $150,000 to match the same amount allocated by the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust.

The theatre opened in 1908 and since being severely damaged in the February 2011 earthquake it has been rebuilt in its original Edwardian style, at a cost of $40 million.

Chief executive Neil Cox said the money was vital for servicing commercial loans of more than $2 million that were taken to fund the rebuild.

He said donations from the public had secured the theatre's future.
