A pedestrian is in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital after a serious crash that has closed a suburban road.

Breens Road in the city's western suburb of Harewood was expected to remain closed until later this evening after a car struck a pedestrian outside a school about 3pm.
Police said the pedestrian was believed to be in a critical condition, while the man driving the car was uninjured but very shaken.
Investigations into the crash were continuing.
