Fonterra in court over buttermilk scandal

12:49 pm on 3 February 2015

Fonterra has been charged in connection with a rotting buttermilk case.

The company faced nine charges of discharging contaminants when it appeared in the New Plymouth District Court this morning.

The charges, which the company denied, were been brought by the Taranaki Regional Council under the Resource Management Act.

They related to the dumping of more than three million litres of buttermilk and milk contaminated with oil waste at the Eltham wastewater plant in 2013.

Since then, Eltham residents had complained of poor health caused by chemicals released by the rotting buttermilk.

Judge Allan Roberts adjourned the case for a judicial teleconference on 16 February when a decision would be made about whether it goes to trial.
