New Zealand First has already called for Mr Matthews to step down pending an independent investigation into how a senior manager at the Ministry of Transport committed large-scale fraud on his watch.

The manager, Joanne Harrison, stole nearly $750,000 while Mr Matthews was chief executive at the ministry.

House Speaker David Carter, who heads the parlimentary committee that appointed Mr Matthews, said he fully backed him as Auditor-General.

Mr Little said in the light of new information that has become public, he intended to contact Mr Carter.

"There is a question about whether the appointment panel had access to that information," he said.

"And if they didn't, then I think they've got to review the appointment and ask themselves whether - if they'd had that information - they might have made a different decision."
