Ms Wagner said in the past 15 months there had been three interceptions of controlled drugs being imported by people aged over 65.

At this time of year many people travelled overseas, and people needed to be aware of the risks, she said.

Customs' intelligence suggested older generations, the young and otherwise vulnerable people were at risk of being targeted, she said.

"Perhaps they're approached [online], they haven't been online before, maybe they're not quite as aware of how the internet can scam you, and they just end up falling in a big hole."

She said anyone with concerns could call 0800 4 CUSTOMS.
