A radiologist at North Shore hospital in Auckland says a new CT scanner will enable up to 50% more patients to be processed.
The $2.8 million machine provides fast scans and four dimensional images which allows doctors to see every angle of an organ.
David Cranfield says that previously some non-urgent patients were waiting up to six months for a scan.
But the new faster technology will have a dramatic impact on waiting times.
Dr Cranfield says Waitemata DHB has cut corners to save money in the past, but has now realised the need for the new technology.
