Firefighters have called off a one-hour strike on Friday at noon, but issued a new strike notice for a fortnight's time.

The Professional Firefighters' Union and Fire and Emergency have been in bargaining talks this week.

The union says it has reworked some claims and expects fresh information in talks with the agency on Monday.

It warns the strike cancellation will only be a short respite if they can't find a way to a settlement.

Firefighters are still due to strike for an hour next Friday, 14 November, and the new notice is for an hour-long strike on 21 November.

Eariler today, RNZ revealed FENZ is considering cutting jobs and "stopping or slowing" activities as it seeks to save $50 million a year.

It says the jobs of frontline firefighters are not at risk, but the union fears new recruits will not be added.
