Although spring is just around the corner, it seems winter isn't done with the country yet with wet weather expected through the end of the week.

MetService says rain and fog dominated on Tuesday morning.

And Auckland and Northland could expect isolated showers on Tuesday.

Low cloud or fog fell across parts of Waikato, Taranaki, Wellington, Canterbury and coastal Marlborough.

The South Island, except Fiordland, was expected to be generally fine.

"A subtropical low north of New Zealand is expected to move southeast along northern and eastern parts of the North Island during Wednesday, and could bring a brief period of rain and southeast gales," MetService said.

"Also, an active front, preceded by northerly gales, approaches the South Island from the Tasman Sea on Wednesday, and moves over southern areas during Thursday morning."

Watches in place

But heavy rain and strong wind watches are in place for Fiordland from midnight Wednesday through to Thursday.

A heavy rain watch is also in place for the headwaters of the Otago lakes and rivers from 4am Thursday.

While Central Otago, Queenstown Lakes District, Southland and Stewart Island have strong wind watches overnight Wednesday and into Thursday morning.

In the North Island, Gisborne and northern parts of Tai Rāwhiti were under a heavy rain watch throughout Wednesday.

And a strong wind watch is in place for eastern Northland and Great Barrier Island until 3pm Wednesday.
