Shortly after 6.30am near Hekerua Bay, a helicopter and Coastguard boat were deployed in response to reports of a person in difficulty in the water.
Police officers and St John also responded.
It is understood the person had been on board a boat that has sunk.
Before emergency services arrived, a nearby resident on Waiheke said he saw a local man head out on a paddle board, and rescue a person from the water.
He said smashed-up bits of boat were still floating around the rocks.
The police said the person was in a moderate condition when they reached the shore.
