A southerly change has brought relief to firefighters battling the blazes at Macraes, south of Oamaru, and Ben Lomond, near Queenstown.

Fire and Emergency said both fires were being monitored, but rain and cooler conditions meant no further issues were expected.

Both fires were caused by high country burns which got out of control and Fire and Emergency has asked for land managers in Otago to talk to them before any burn-off.

The Macraes fire burnt through 800 hectares of farmland and the Ben Lomond blaze has covered 800 to 1000 hectares.

A controlled burn on Ben Lomond breached its containment line, 9 September 2020.
