The 31-year-old motorcyclist had been stopped by a police officer for a routine traffic stop shortly after 10am on Dennis Road in Papatoetoe.

But police said the woman then dismounted the bike and stole the police car.

An extensive search was launched, involving an Armed Response Team and an Eagle Helicopter.

The car was found at about 12.35pm, about a kilometre away on Hamilton Road.

The woman was found at a nearby address half an hour later.

Acting Counties Manukau district commander Jared Pirret said the car sustained minor damage, but nothing was taken.

Firearms within the car remained secured in their lock boxes.

An investigation has been launched, and the Independent Police Conduct Authority will be notified.
