Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Health Minister David Clark announced today that the $79 million project had been approved.

All mental health services currently housed at Princess Margaret will relocate to Hillmorton.

Patients' families have complained about the desolate conditions at Princess Margaret. The hospital is the process of being decommissioned and several services have already moved to other facilities.

The new facility will provide services for mothers and babies, child and adolescent and family in-patient services, and adults with high and complex needs.

Canterbury District Health Board will manage the project.
