Man killed in Kawerau police shooting named

The man who died after a fatal police shooting in Kawerau yesterday has been named as Astin Cruz Hooper of Te Teko.

Mr Hooper, 29, was shot by police near the Bay of Plenty town on on Thursday, 21 February.

He had robbed the First Credit Union bank in Kawerau before being pursued by the police.

The Armed Offenders Squad was also dispatched to locate the man, who is said to have been a patched Mongrel Mob member.

He was shot and killed in an exchange of fire.

Detective Inspector Mark Loper said the investigation into the shooting was ongoing.

"Police investigating the shooting are continuing to ask for any witnesses to the incident to come forward," he said.

"Investigators believe there would have been a number of people travelling on the rural roads between Kawerau and Edgecumbe on Thursday morning between 9am and 10.30am who would have seen the incident and may have dash cam footage from when they have driven past the incident as it unfolded."
