A heavy rain warning is in place for the region until 3pm tomorrow, with up to 80mm more rain expected.

Wairoa is of most concern and residents are being asked to reconsider non-urgent travel, with rural schools likely to be affected.

Large swells on the coast near Haumoana and Te Awanga are also forecast, though are expected to drop from a high of five metres today to between three-and-a-half and four metres tomorrow.

The rain and wind could topple trees and damage power lines, Civil Defence said.
