Roxburgh Area School opened this morning for the first time since floodwater and mud gushed through the town's streets.

Principal Gary Pasco said pupils had returned to class.

He said carpets damaged by floodwater would be repaired over the the summer holidays.

The Central Otago town's main highway, State Highway 8, was opened at the weekend but is closed again for work on large slips at the north and south ends.

It is expected to reopen for good from 6pm tomorrow, but Central Otago District Council said users should expect delays of up to five minutes and speed restrictions at work sites.

It was initially expected the road would be closed until Thursday.

It will be closed until about Thursday while the last of the slips are cleared.

Access has been restored to fruit stalls cut off since the massive downpour.

Teviot Valley Community Board chairperson Raymond Gunn said cordons had been shrunk right back to the immediate slip area.

"We're mindful a lot of businesses are struggling when you close the main highways through town and the neighbouring areas ... and we're trying to have public access to as many as we can."

The deluge last Sunday disrupted the town's drinking water and sewage systems.
