The girl, who has name suppression, appeared in the High Court in Hamilton accused of killing Norman Kingi last month.
Mr Kingi, 54, was stabbed after disturbing a group of young people breaking into a vehicle on 28 July.
The teenager was granted electronic monitored bail and is set to go to trial in May next year.
A second girl, aged 15, who is facing the same charge, also appeared in the High Court but did not enter a plea.
She was remanded in the continued custody of the Ministry for Vulnerable Children and will reappear in court next month.
