Legislation is also being introduced to allow electric cars access to other roads, such as bus lanes.

Hybrids will qualify under the trial, which the agency wants to introduce for a fortnight in March, on six T2 and truck lanes that bypass on-ramp traffic lights.

Owners of electric vehicles on the vehicle register in the city will receive a sticker to identify their cars during the trial.

Submissions on the draft bylaw close on 13 January.
