A man who inflicted serious injuries on his three-month-old son, including broken bones and bleeding in the brain, has been jailed for six years.
Simon Bennett, who is 29, cried quietly in the dock as he was sentenced in the Wellington District Court.
The court heard that the injuries were inflicted in January last year. A report on the baby's health indicates he has suffered permanent brain damage and will have difficulty walking.
Judge Denys Barry set a starting point of nine years' jail for Bennett but gave him a discount in recognition of his guilty plea and the remorse he has shown.
