Israeli embassy to reopen

1:32 pm on 8 April 2010

Israel's first resident ambassador in eight years is expected to arrive in New Zealand next week.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says New Zealand has approved a request by the Israeli government to reopen its embassy, which closed in 2002.

The Israeli embassy in Canberra says it has not yet confirmed the site of the new embassy in Wellington, but hopes to do so next week.

It says it has been trying to find a suitable location, but has had trouble finding a building with enough security.

Ambassador Shemi Tzur will arrive next week and present his credentials to the Governor-General on 7 May.

A new protest group called No Israeli Embassy in Wellington, says Israel is a racist state which should not be allowed to re-establish a presence on New Zealand soil.
