RNZ inside out

2:39 pm on 7 August 2015

Welcome to the first in a series of short articles to keep Radio New Zealand listeners and viewers informed about the various things we have under way at Radio New Zealand (RNZ).

It will also provide an opportunity for people to provide feedback on our plans and will hopefully encourage debate within the RNZ community.

I figure the more information we can share with you the better.

RNZ is a treasure. As the country's sole commercial-free public broadcaster we play a unique role in providing people with journalism, programming and entertainment that they can find nowhere else.

Our main goal - the thing we talk about tirelessly and shape our plans around - is to ensure RNZ continues to flourish in a rapidly-changing media environment.

RNZ is evolving as we respond to the new ways people are accessing, creating and sharing news and information.

That means we are providing more content online, including written stories, photographs, video and now even cartoons.

The Wireless , our website aimed at Kiwis in their 20s, has provided an RNZ experience to thousands of young people who otherwise might not have had any connection to their national broadcaster.

This doesn't mean we are reducing our commitment to providing great radio.

We have to do both - continue to provide the superb programming our loyal audiences value, while also developing new strings to our bow.

This week's news about John Campbell is a good example of how we are balancing both the old and new.

John is bringing his outstanding broadcast and journalism skills back to RNZ. And he is also bringing his 118,000 Twitter followers.

The programme he will present will be great radio, and will also be available online, complete with pictures and video.

That's the opportunity we have at RNZ - to provide credible, independent and accurate journalism in whatever form suits you.

Your feedback is welcome. Enter the discussion below or email your comments to feedback@radionz.co.nz.
