Police have arrested a man in east Auckland after he climbed onto the roof of a four-storey building after a car chase this morning.

The man sped away from police while he was driving in Parnell near the city centre.

Police were forced to abandoned the pursuit on Tamaki Drive due to the speed and manner of driving.

The car was then found in Glen Innes but the driver fled onto the roof of a block of flats.

The police negotiation team was called and the man came down 30 minutes later.
