A man is dead and another injured after a police car pursuit in South Auckland late on Friday.
Police say Stephen Henare Tepania, who was 28, was the passenger in a car that had been signalled to stop just before 10pm, during a number plate check.
The car took off and moments later crashed into another and flipped on Boundary Rd in Otara, trapping its two occupants.
The drivers of both cars were treated in hospital.
An independent police investigator has started a criminal investigation and the police will also carry out a practice and policy review.
