The Rail and Maritime Transport Union is calling for better security on Auckland trains to stop workers and Maori wardens from being attacked.
The union's General Secretary Wayne Butson says assaults on ticketing inspectors and Maori Wardens are rising.
He says last weekend a gang of 40 people attacked a young warden in Papakura.
In February two train inspectors were assaulted at the Ranui and Swanson stations.
In one of the incidents the worker was attacked by about eight people, leaving him with a fractured eye socket.
Mr Butson says staff are regularly subject to verbal attacks and threatening behaviour, usually from people trying to avoid paying their fares.
He says the situation could be avoided if Auckland Transport sold tickets on board trains, and had more ticketing inspectors.
