Teachers win reprieve from code of conduct

Teachers have won a reprieve from a tough new code of conduct, which they say could curb teachers' rights to speak out.

They will however face renewed pressure to agree to it next year.

At issue is a code of conduct for state services. Administered by the State Services Commission, it requires respect for the authority of the government of the day.

Teacher representatives say that would stifle debate - and they have won support from Education Minister Anne Tolley, who says the education sector is already under too much pressure.

State Services Minister Tony Ryall says he has spoken to the State Services Commissioner and the latter has agreed to delay extending the code. But the matter will be revisited next year.
