Tuis breeding on Chatham Islands

4:33 pm on 21 October 2009

A successful transfer of 14 Chatham Islands tui has resulted in the species breeding on the main island of the Chathams.

The birds were transferred from a nature reserve on Rangatira Island earlier this year.

Chatham Islands tui are bigger than other tui and were last seen on the mainland in the early 1980s. The were about 350 in the late 1990s.

The transfer by the Chatham Island Taiko Trust was the first time the endangered species has been relocated.

It hopes 40 of the tomtit species will also be moved to the main island early next year.
