More election promises from Labour, National despite spending curbs

Both the Labour and National parties produced more election sweeteners over Labour Weekend, despite saying they want to curb spending.

National Party leader John Key is promising to cover the mortgage and rent payments of people who find themselves unemployed in the recession.

Mr Key has not said how this would be funded, but says it would not add to the Government deficit.

The Green Party says the proposal would cost more than Mr Key thinks, because he under-estimates the number of people who could lose their jobs.

Labour leader Helen Clark has given few details in announcing her party's plan to set up a Pacific television channel.

She says New Zealand On Air would determine the most cost effective way of launching it.
