The Labour Party has released its employment relations policy, saying it will help workers facing tough economic times.
This follows an announcement from National leader John Key that they would provide short-term relief for people who lose their jobs.
Labour's policy includes a law change that would ensure employers provide a minimum level of compensation to workers they make redundant.
The party says it would also encourage employers to notify government agencies about mass redundancies, so workers get the help they need at the earliest opportunity.
It says it will also make sure the law does not stop workers from striking if their employers undermine a collective agreement by restructuring or outsourcing.
Labour would introduce a retraining allowance for people who have lost their jobs after five years in the workforce.
Employees who want to retrain after being in the work force for 10 years would also be entitled to financial help.
