Greens call for electric rail system for Auckland

7:08 pm on 15 October 2008

The Green Party has launched its Auckland Transport Policy calling for an electric rail loop through central Auckland, to connect with loops to the airport and the Northern Busway.

Co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons said the plan could be funded without imposing extra taxes or rates, by moving investment out of new motorways.

She said that would release $400 million in the first year, and more every year after that.

Ms Fitzsimons says it is not possible to put a dollar figure on the transport plan, as it would be an incremental project carried out over a number of years.
