New Zealand First is promising a 10% increase in superannuation payments to veterans who have served in New Zealand forces overseas.

Party leader Winston Peters told delegates at an RSA meeting in Wellington on Wednesday that more support is needed for veterans.

He said New Zealand First wanted to increase funding to veteran retirement homes.

Mr Peters said alongside the Super Gold Card for the over-65s, there would be an added bonus for older veterans.

He said a 10% rise in superannuation would be phased in over time, and extended to the widows or widowers of the service people.
