The National Party says the amount of office space leased to the public service has increased 42% in the past five years.
State Services spokesperson Gerry Brownlee says answers to a series of Parliamentary questions reveal the public service now leases 445,915 square metres of floor space in central Wellington.
Mr Brownlee says the Government spends about $106 million a year on rent.
At a time when households are having to contain their spending, Mr Brownlee says the Government should do the same.
He says a National-led Government would put a cap on the number of public servants in Wellington and focus more on the provision of public services.
