The index dropped to 121.8, down from 123.7 in November.

ANZ chief economist Sharon Zollner said consumers were feeling relaxed, probably because the labour market remained strong.

She said consumers were happy about their current financial situation with a net 14 percent feeling financially better off than they did a year ago. About a third believed it was a good time to buy a major household item.

Confidence fell most sharply in Auckland and Canterbury, while Wellington consumers were the most confident.
