Poisonous lionfish are thought to be continuing to spread across the eastern Mediterranean, posing a serious threat to ecosystems.

Researchers from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature said there had been new sightings of the highly invasive species in waters around Turkey and Cypress.

It was thought the fish, which could inflict painful and occasionally deadly stings on humans, may have entered the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal.
