Power is out to almost 5000 homes and businesses in central Auckland.
The police said traffic lights were not working in the central business district and in the nearby suburbs of Eden Terrace, Grafton and Newmarket.
A spokesperson for lines company Vector said it expected power to be restored shortly before 1am.
A multiple feeder outage had caused the power cut, the spokesperson said.
